Introduction

Waraqa ibn Nawfal (RA) is one of the most important early figures connected to the beginning of Islam. Even though he is not as widely discussed as many companions, his role was unique and deeply honorable.

He was the first person to clearly confirm that Muhammad ﷺ was truly a prophet after the first revelation. At a moment when the Prophet ﷺ was shaken, confused, and overwhelmed by what had happened in the cave of Hira, Waraqa understood the truth.

He recognized the sign of prophethood because he was a learned man who knew the earlier scriptures and was searching for the religion of truth.

1. Who Was Waraqa Ibn Nawfal?

Waraqa ibn Nawfal was:

• A relative of Khadijah (RA)
• An elderly man in Makkah
• A scholar familiar with Christianity and earlier revelation
• One of the few people who had rejected idol worship before Islam

He was among those rare individuals in pre-Islamic Makkah who were not satisfied with idol worship and wanted the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) عليه السلام.

He had studied the scriptures and knew about prophets, revelation, and the signs of divine messages.

This is what made his testimony so powerful.

2. The Background: The First Revelation

To understand Waraqa’s importance, we need to understand the moment in which he appears.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to go to the cave of Hira to worship and reflect. He was disturbed by the corruption of Makkah and wanted solitude.

Then one night, Jibreel (Gabriel) عليه السلام came to him and commanded him:

“Read” or “Recite”.

The Prophet ﷺ was terrified. This was an overwhelming and life-changing experience. After the encounter, he rushed home to Khadijah (RA), trembling, and said:

“Cover me, cover me.”

He was deeply shaken and unsure of what exactly had happened.

3. Khadijah’s Role Before Waraqa

Before taking the Prophet ﷺ to Waraqa, Khadijah (RA) comforted him with one of the most beautiful testimonies ever given.

She told him that Allah would never disgrace him because he:

• Maintained family ties
• Helped the poor
• Honored guests
• Assisted those in hardship
• Supported truth and justice

This is very important.

Khadijah (RA) did not just comfort him emotionally. She reminded him that his noble character was proof that Allah would not abandon him.

Then she took him to someone who could explain the event from the perspective of revelation: Waraqa ibn Nawfal.

4. Waraqa Listens to the Prophet ﷺ

When the Prophet ﷺ described what happened in the cave, Waraqa immediately understood what this meant.

He did not hesitate.

He told the Prophet ﷺ that the being who came to him was the same heavenly messenger who had come to Musa (Moses) عليه السلام.

This means Waraqa recognized that:

• This was not madness
• This was not imagination
• This was not an evil spirit
• This was revelation from Allah

He knew that Muhammad ﷺ had been chosen as a prophet.

This made Waraqa the first person to confirm the Prophet’s prophethood in a knowledgeable and explicit way.

5. What Did Waraqa Say?

Waraqa said words of deep insight. In meaning, he said:

This is the same Namus (keeper of secrets / angel of revelation) who came to Musa عليه السلام

I wish I were young again

I wish I would still be alive when your people drive you out

The Prophet ﷺ was surprised and asked:

“Will they drive me out?”

Waraqa replied in meaning:

No man has ever brought what you have brought except that he was opposed.

This was profound.

At the very beginning of revelation, before Islam had even been preached publicly, Waraqa already knew a pattern of history:

• Prophets bring truth
• Societies resist truth
• Messengers are opposed, mocked, and harmed

So he was not only confirming prophethood — he was also preparing the Prophet ﷺ for the road ahead.

6. Why Was This So Important?

This moment was important for many reasons.

A. The Prophet ﷺ had just gone through a shocking experience

He needed reassurance and clarity.

B. Khadijah (RA) gave emotional and moral reassurance

She reminded him of his character.

C. Waraqa gave scriptural and intellectual confirmation

He recognized the signs of revelation.

So together, Khadijah and Waraqa played a crucial role in the earliest moments of Islam:

• Khadijah comforted the Prophet ﷺ with love and certainty
• Waraqa confirmed his prophethood through knowledge

This was one of the first great supports given to the Prophet ﷺ.

7. Waraqa’s Knowledge and Sincerity

Waraqa was not an ordinary man. He had spent his life searching, studying, and turning away from idol worship.

He was familiar with divine scripture. Some reports mention that he wrote from the Gospel in Arabic as much as Allah willed. This tells us that he was deeply learned.

What is beautiful is that when truth came to him, he did not reject it out of pride.

Many learned people in history failed this test. They recognized the truth but refused to follow it because of status, ego, or fear.

Waraqa was different.

The moment he heard the description, he recognized the truth and testified to it.

This shows the beauty of sincere knowledge:

real knowledge should lead a person to humility and acceptance of truth.

8. His Love for the Prophet ﷺ

One of the most touching parts of the story is when Waraqa says he wishes he were younger and could support the Prophet ﷺ when the people turn against him.

This tells us that Waraqa was not just making an academic statement. He was emotionally invested. He believed in the Prophet ﷺ and wanted to stand beside him.

He knew that prophethood would bring hardship, and he wished he could be there to defend the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

This shows:

• his sincerity,
• his love for truth,
• and his immediate loyalty to the Prophet ﷺ.

9. Did Waraqa Accept Islam?

This is often discussed.

Because Waraqa died very early, before the public call of Islam fully unfolded, there is some discussion in how people describe him. But the general understanding from the narrations is that he believed in the Prophet ﷺ and confirmed his message.

There are narrations that indicate the Prophet ﷺ saw good signs regarding Waraqa’s condition, and many scholars speak of him with honor and hope because of his affirmation of the Prophet ﷺ.

So while his life ended very early in the story of Islam, his place remains noble because he recognized and affirmed the truth immediately.

11. The Contrast Between Waraqa and Others

Waraqa’s story becomes even more powerful when we compare him to others.

Later, many people in Makkah would reject the Prophet ﷺ despite his honesty and noble character. Some people among Jews and Christians also recognized signs of prophethood but still did not follow him.

But Waraqa, with sincerity and knowledge, accepted what he heard almost immediately.

So his story teaches us that:

knowledge without arrogance leads to faith,

and a pure heart can recognize the truth quickly.

A. Sincere seekers recognize truth

Waraqa had spent years looking for the religion of truth, and when truth came, he recognized it.

B. Knowledge is a gift when joined with humility

His learning did not make him arrogant. It made him ready.

C. The beginning of Islam was supported by remarkable people

At the earliest stage, Allah surrounded the Prophet ﷺ with people who gave him strength:

• Khadijah with comfort,
• Waraqa with confirmation.

D. The path of truth is difficult

Waraqa immediately knew that the Prophet ﷺ would be opposed. This is the history of prophetic missions.

E. One sincere testimony can be powerful

At a critical moment, Waraqa’s words carried immense weight.

13. His Place in the Story of Islam

Even though Waraqa does not appear for long in the seerah, his presence is unforgettable.

He stands at the doorway of revelation.

At the moment when heaven first touched earth through the Qur’an’s descent to Muhammad ﷺ, Waraqa was there to say:

This is real. This is the truth. This is prophethood.

That is an extraordinary role.

He did not live long enough to see:

• the public da’wah,
• the persecution,
• the hijrah,
• Badr,
• Makkah’s conquest.

But he occupies an honored place at the very beginning — the moment Islam started.

Waraqa ibn Nawfal (RA) was a learned and sincere man from Makkah who had rejected idol worship and studied earlier scriptures. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ received the first revelation and returned home shaken, Khadijah (RA) took him to Waraqa. After hearing what happened in the cave of Hira, Waraqa immediately recognized that the angel who came was the same one who came to Musa عليه السلام. He confirmed that Muhammad ﷺ was a prophet and warned him that his people would oppose him, because this is what happens to those who bring divine truth. Waraqa’s role was unique because he was the first to clearly confirm the Prophet’s prophethood.

Waraqa’s story is short, but full of light.

He teaches us that a heart trained by sincerity can recognize revelation.

He teaches us that knowledge should bring humility, not pride.
